When you’re rushing through airport security, the last thing you want is to lose your favorite SPF. Of course, it might not ruin your vacation, but it will cost you to replace it. Sunscreen might seem like a simple item to pack, but if you’re not familiar with TSA rules, it can happen. So, no matter if you’re heading off on a sun-drenched vacation, updating your knowledge of TSA sunscreen guidelines is prudent.

With this in mind, here are five nuggets of wisdom that will help you pack the right way and stop your sun lotion from being confiscated.

TSA Sunscreen Tip #1 – Know the 3-1-1 Rule

Our first TSA sunscreen tip relates to the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule. It’s one that applies to all liquids, gels, and aerosols in carry-on luggage, and it basically means each container you bring in your carry-on entitlement must be 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less, and all items must fit in 1 clear quart-sized bag. Each passenger is allowed 1 bag total.

Sunscreen counts as a liquid under these rules, even if it’s creamy or lotion-based. If your bottle is larger than 3.4 oz, it needs to go in your checked bag or it will be tossed.

Tip #2 – Going For a Stick or Solid Sunscreen Is Wise

One of the easiest ways to avoid TSA issues is to switch to a sunscreen stick. Obviously, solid products like these don’t count as liquids, so they aren’t subject to the 3.4 oz limit. You can pack them in your carry-on without including them in your liquid bag, which frees up space for other essentials like toothpaste or moisturizer.

Stick sunscreens are especially travel-friendly because they’re compact, mess-free, and ideal for quick touch-ups during layovers or while sightseeing. It’s also great to have one in your carry-on, as believe it or not, you can get UV damage during the flight, especially if you have a window seat.

Tip #3 – Keep It Easily Accessible

Even if your sunscreen is under the limit, TSA agents may still ask to inspect your liquid bag. If you want to keep things smooth, you should place your clear quart-sized bag in an easy-to-reach spot in your carry-on. Pulling it out quickly helps avoid hold-ups and keeps the line moving – something both you and your fellow passengers will appreciate.

Tip #4 – Don’t Leave Buying Sunscreen Until The Departure Lounge

Some travelers assume they can just buy sunscreen after they’ve gone through security, but that’s quite a gamble. Airport shops may not have a great choice available, and there’s a high likelihood that you’ll end up with something that’s not suited to your needs.

Buying yours early ensures you get a product you can be sure is going to give you the protection your skin requires. Last-minute shopping at the airport shop isn’t the way to go.

Tip #5 – Avoid the “Mystery Ingredients” Trap

If you’re flying internationally, it’s easy to get tempted to pick up sunscreen abroad – especially if it’s a lot cheaper than you’re used to. The thing is, regulations vary wildly between different countries, with some ingredients used actually being banned in the U.S. Throw in the fact that the label might be in a different language, and you can see where the risk lies.

By packing a stick sunscreen from home, you’ll know exactly what’s in it and how it performs. No mystery chemicals, no questionable formulas – just reliable protection you’re already familiar with.

Get a TSA Sunscreen & Breeze Through Security

Getting pulled up by TSA staff for breaking the 3-1-1 rule can be frustrating and more than a little stressful. However, it’s something you can avoid completely by switching to a stick sunscreen that’s not even classified as a liquid. Also, by buying yours well in advance, you’ll have one less thing to worry about as you head off for a relaxing break.

So, why not invest in a TSA-approved stick sunscreen for your next vacation? It’s a move that will help you breeze through security while others are having to toss theirs in the trash. Food for thought indeed.
